So What’s a Hobby Farm?
Technically it’s a farm classified as 50 acres or less and whereby the farm itself is not focused as a business that is relied upon as the sole source of income. Lingohof is our little 5-acre hobby farm in North Central Florida, where we live, enjoy life and experiment with growing things in small batches.
In terms of edibles, we grow our own pears, figs and blueberries. We also grow oregano, rosemary, and thyme. Other food projects include saffron, limes, lemons, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, blackberries, mint and basil. Everything is in small batches right now for our own consumption, but as we grow more and experiment, we may scale up if we are successful.
We are also experimenting with growing other plants for resale such as red cedar trees, fig trees, coontie palms, various lilies, dwarf blackberry bushes and wildflowers.
Our hobby farm by the numbers
In our work lives, we came to value tracking and good data and so it’s spilled over some into our home life on the farm. Here are some of the more fun stats we keep.
Sustainable Farming
It’s easier to practice sustainable farming at a small scale.
For whatever we grow, we try to maintain an efficient environmental footprint. We use only natural, organic fertilizers and no harsh pesticides.
We also strive to determine the best ways to manage our water use responsibly and let nature do as much of the work as possible.
Locally Proven
Anything we decide to sell has come directly from our little farm. If it’s edible, we already eat it at our table. If it’s a tree or flower, we’ve already been growing it on our farm first.
All of our agriculture is honest and proven on our own farm first.
What’s New
There’s always something cooking down at Lingohof, whether it’s literally in the kitchen or something new getting planted or coming out of the ground. It’s always busy at the farm. Check in for an update.
Flora and Fauna
For a little 5-acre hobby farm, we enjoy an incredible variety of plants and even some wildlife. We invite you to learn more about what’s living on the farm besides just us and our two dogs.
Projects
When we got the farm, it was a diamond in the rough. We knew it had almost unlimited potential, it just needed a vision, patience, and careful attention to detail. See our past projects and how we’ve been turning Lingohof into our rural paradise.
